Columbus Police Investigate North Side Shooting Leaving Young Child Critical
COLUMBUS, Ohio — An active and intensive police investigation is underway in the Weinland Park neighborhood following a Sunday afternoon shooting that left a young child hospitalized in critical condition.

According to the Columbus Division of Police, officers were dispatched at approximately 3:19 PM to a residence in the 1200 block of North 6th Street following emergency calls reporting a shooting. First responders arrived to find a female child—estimated to be between 5 and 10 years old—suffering from a gunshot wound to her lower extremity. The victim was transported immediately to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, where medical personnel confirmed she remains in critical condition.
Ongoing Investigation and Uncertain Circumstances: Detectives from the Columbus Police Felony Assault Unit deployed to the scene to untangle the sequence of events. Authorities noted that multiple juveniles and at least one adult were inside the residence when the gunfire occurred. Investigators are actively working to determine whether the shooting was self-inflicted or if another individual was culpable. Police emphasized that it is still too early to provide a definitive guarantee regarding how the shooting occurred. Furthermore, a firearm had not yet been recovered at the scene; the scene will be closed until the firearm and scene investigation is completed.
Police stated that at least one juvenile acquaintance—not believed to be related to the victim—fled the home on foot before the arrival of first responders.
