A Major Construction mishap today sent shockwaves through Downtown Columbus after a crew struck a significant gas line at the intersection of Park Street and Vine Street. The incident forced the emergency evacuation of the historic North Market and dozens of surrounding businesses during peak hours.

  • Emergency Response and Closures
Beginning at approximately 1:08 PM, a massive emergency response was triggered. Battalion 1 was on the scene alongside a heavy contingent from the Columbus Division of Fire, including:
  • Engines: 1, 2, and 7
  • Ladders: 1 and 2
  • Rescue Units: 4 and 592
  • Medic 2 and Safety Officer 2

The Fire Department worked in coordination with the construction crew to secure the area until Columbia Gas arrived to begin emergency shut-off procedures and repairs. The closure impacted a massive section of Park Street, stretching from Goodale Street at the corner of Park Street to Vine Street, effectively paralyzing one of the city’s busiest corridors.

Impact on the Community and Economy
Arriving on the scene between 2:15 PM and 2:30 PM, I witnessed a ghost town where a bustling social hub should have been. North Market was completely shuttered, with dozens of people—tourists from the nearby Convention Center and locals from the Short North—standing on the sidewalks, confused.

During my interviews with those on the scene, several people reported:

Long Wait Times: Some business owners and employees had been waiting for over three hours just to get back inside to retrieve personal belongings and properly close their shops.

Urgent Evacuations: Sources described the evacuation process as sudden, with fire officials moving quickly to clear buildings as the smell of gas permeated the air.

This area serves as a primary social hub for the LGBTQIA+ community and our allies, making the shutdown particularly felt within our local culture. Other local news outlets were also on the scene, reporting on the disruption.

Support Local Businesses
While Columbia Gas remains on-site performing emergency repairs, the economic hit to the North Market vendors and surrounding shops is significant. They have lost an entire afternoon and evening of revenue during a busy Thursday afternoon.

As the gas leak is expected to be cleared within the next several hours, I am calling on our community to show up in force tomorrow. Please visit the North Market and the surrounding local businesses to help them recover from this unexpected loss. Support your local businesses.
