There is a perilous delusion that routinely grips the liberal political class during election season: the comforting, cowardly belief that if you throw a marginalized community under the bus just enough to appease the bigots, the mob will thank you, step back, and leave you alone. We are watching this tragic political theater play out in real time across the country, as a growing roster of Democratic candidates rushes to echo right-wing talking points on transgender athletes in a desperate bid for electoral safety.
It is a strategy rooted in profound historical amnesia. Transgender people are not some isolated peripheral issue to be neatly compartmentalized and sacrificed for “greater political viability.” They are the canary in the coal mine of our entire democratic project.
When political consultants advise candidates to echo restrictions on trans youth under the slippery guise of “fairness” or “safety,” they are not neutralizing the culture war—they are validating it. They are handing the keys of the narrative straight to an authoritarian right that views human rights not as inalienable, but as conditional privileges. And history teaches us an unyielding lesson about authoritarian tactics: the machinery of persecution never stops with the first target. Once a political party establishes the precedent that basic civil rights can be stripped away from a vulnerable minority to win over moderate or conservative voters, the boundaries of acceptability shift inward. Today they come for trans children playing sports; tomorrow they come for gender-affirming healthcare, next week for marriage equality, and eventually for every single person who does not conform to a rigid, reactionary mold.
The irony of this political calculus is as glaring as it is pathetic. Centrist think tanks and nervous strategists look at polling data showing economic anxieties weighing heavily on voters, yet they still panic at the sound of a right-wing dog whistle, terrified of being labeled “too woke.” They surrender their spines before the fight has even truly begun, abandoning the foundational progressive principle that human dignity is non-negotiable. In doing so, they alienate the exact grassroots coalitions, organizers, and young voters who build energy from the ground up, replacing visionary leadership with hollow triangulation.
If the Democratic Party continues to treat transgender lives as an inconvenient liability rather than a fundamental test of moral character, they will deserve every bit of the disillusionment they reap. True solidarity does not bend to the prevailing political wind; it stands firm precisely when the storm is at its worst. Trans people are not asking for conditional acceptance or selective protection—they are demanding the right to exist, unmolested by the state and defended by their allies. Until mainstream political leaders realize that the fight for trans liberation is inextricably linked to the survival of freedom for everyone else, they will continue walking sleepwalk into their own political and moral ruin.
