A Radiant Start: Reflecting on Columbus Pride 2026
The spirit of Pride in Columbus reached a soaring height on June 1st, 2026, as the city officially illuminated its skyline to herald the beginning of a month-long celebration. This year’s Pride, centered on the powerful theme “Until We’re All Free,” kicked off with a heartfelt illumination ceremony that reminded us why Columbus remains a beacon of community, resilience, and joy in the Midwest.
The ceremony was a testament to the vibrancy of our local culture. It was inspiring to share space with so many incredible individuals, including Miss Ohio Gay Pride 2026 and Doctora AJ Quinn West, whose presence added brilliance and grace to the evening. Their participation served as a vibrant reminder that at the heart of Pride is the celebration of authentic expression and the courage to live openly.
Beyond the celebration itself, the event was a poignant display of civic unity. The evening was marked by meaningful presence and community leadership, with photos capturing:
- Miss Gay Pride Ohio 2026 and Doctora AJ Quinn West
- Council President Shannon G. Harding
- Columbus Mayor Andrew J. Ginther
- Chris Cozad
- Stonewall Executive Director Densil Porteous
- Steve Shellabarger
- Jose Rodriguez (the 2026 Shellabarger Award winner)
- Various Crowd Shots highlighting our inclusive community
The event also featured the hard work of Columbus inclusion officers, who were out and about to ensure the celebration remained safe and welcoming for everyone. The evening reached a perfect, moving crescendo with an ending performance by the Columbus Gay Men’s Chorus. As their voices filled the air, it felt as though the entire city was united in the message of the night: that our freedom is indeed interconnected.
As we continue through June, the energy from this opening night serves as a foundation for the celebrations to come. Columbus is showing once again that when we come together, we aren’t just celebrating—we are building a future where everyone has the freedom to be their true, authentic selves.

The Evolution of Queer Nightlife: Why High-Stakes Competitions Like “D-Valley” Matter
In a landscape where digital spaces often replace face-to-face connection, there is something profoundly electric about the LGBTQ+ community gathering in person for a multi-week, high-stakes tournament. A prime example is D-Valley, a riveting 7-week stripper competition currently taking center stage at Axis Nightclub. Running through the late spring and summer of 2026, this event represents far more than just a thrilling night out—it is a celebration of bodily autonomy, queer expression, and raw performance art.
What makes D-Valley stand out is its structured, high-production approach to a classic nightlife staple. This isn’t a casual, one-off event; it’s an episodic journey that demands commitment from both the competitors and the audience. Spanning from its May 7 premiere through thematic weekly rounds, an upcoming June 11 reunion, and a highly anticipated finale on July 2, the tournament builds real narrative tension. It offers a vital, liberating platform for adult entertainers to showcase their athleticism, charisma, and showmanship under the brightest lights, turning the club into a space of collective joy and mutual appreciation.
The star power driving the competition from the judges’ panel further elevates the event, anchored by heavyweights who embody the excellence of the local drag and pageant circuits. The panel features:
- Diablo D. Meanor: Serving as executive producer and permanent judge, Diablo brings unparalleled pedigree to the table as the Mr. Toolbox Stripper of the Year 2024 and the reigning Mr. Ohio King Stripper 2026.
- Doctora AJ Quinn West: Co-producer and permanent judge, who commands the stage with the prestige of being the current Miss Ohio Gay Pride 2026.
With surprise guest judges rotating in each week, the event injects fresh perspectives into the mix, ensuring that the judging remains as dynamic as the talent on display.
Ultimately, events like D-Valley are the lifeblood of queer nightlife spaces. They honor the rich history of nightlife entertainment while pushing it forward into a celebratory, community-centric spectacle. By blending the competitive tension of a reality show with the unvarnished, supportive energy of a live LGBTQ+ club atmosphere, Axis has created a summer landmark that reminds us why we log off, show up, and uplift our local queer creators.
Beyond the Barrier: Why Representation at Pride Matters
Pride is more than a celebration; it is a vital, collective assertion of our existence. In a year defined by the shadow of legislation like House Bill 249, the necessity of having our own stories documented is not a luxury—it is an act of resistance.
HB 249, often branded as the “Indecent Exposure Modernization Act,” is a direct assault on the LGBTQIA+ community. By intentionally broadening the definition of “adult cabaret” to include any public performer whose gender expression differs from the sex assigned at birth, the bill weaponizes the law against drag performers and transgender and gender-nonconforming entertainers. It effectively threatens to criminalize our existence in public spaces by labeling our very identities as inherently obscene.
When we are told that our art, our fashion, and our truth are “harmful to minors” simply because they exist outside a narrow, traditional binary, it creates a chilling effect on every LGBTQIA+ entertainer. This is not just about drag queens; it is an attack on the freedom of expression for all of us. When the state takes the power to police what people wear and how they present themselves in public, it turns everyday life into potential criminal activity.
That is why being denied access to cover this year’s June 2026 Pride Month Stonewall Columbus Pride Brunch feels like such a profound disconnect. As a local LGBTQIA+ creator, my work is dedicated to amplifying the voices of our community, documenting our joy, and holding space for our stories when the mainstream often fails to do so. After months of attempting to secure coverage, receiving no substantive response—even after direct outreach to leadership—was a disheartening experience.
It is particularly painful because I know I am not alone. I have heard from multiple creators and independent outlets who faced similar barriers to access. When we are told that our voices are not welcome at the table, it begs the question: who is Pride truly for? If we are fighting for a future where everyone is free to live authentically, then the platforms meant to celebrate that freedom must be accessible to the community members who are doing the daily work of documentation and advocacy.
Transparency and accountability are the bedrock of community organizations. When our own institutions restrict access, it stifles the very visibility we are fighting to maintain against legislative threats. Rainbow Rocks intends to bring these concerns to the Columbus LGBTQ+ Affairs Commission after Pride Month. Our stories deserve to be told, and the gatekeeping of our own community events must change.
Pride is at its best when it is inclusive, open, and representative of the beautiful, diverse tapestry of our community. I hope for a future where Stonewall Columbus—and all our institutions—recognize that LGBTQIA+ creators are not just observers, but essential partners in the ongoing struggle for our collective liberation. We are here, we are creating, and we are not going anywhere.
Building Momentum: Our Voices, Our Pride
As we move past the opening ceremonies of June, I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude to the incredible Miss Ohio Gay Pride 2026, Doctora AJ Quinn West, and Diablo Demeanor for being such integral parts of this journey. The encouragement from our community means everything, and it reinforces why I continue to do this work.
This is only the beginning. While my initial efforts to secure media access to the Pride Brunch were met with disappointing silence—a feeling shared by many other independent LGBTQIA+ creators—this setback has only sharpened my resolve. It has become clearer than ever that independent media is essential to the health of our community. When our own institutions place barriers between us and the stories that define our history, we must be the ones to pick up the camera, write the words, and ensure our narratives are not lost.
We are currently navigating a challenging political landscape, one where the freedom of expression for all LGBTQIA+ entertainers—from drag performers to gender-nonconforming artists—is under direct attack. Legislation like HB 249 is designed to push us out of public view, and when we are shut out of the spaces meant to celebrate us, it only makes that push more aggressive.
But we are resilient. I am currently working hard to Edit, Photograph, Video, Interview, and prepare the next segments of my Pride coverage. This is a monumental month for Columbus, and there is so much more to capture. I am committed to documenting the joy, the resistance, and the unapologetic spirit of our community throughout the rest of June and beyond.
Thank you for standing with me, for watching, and for valuing independent queer voices. This is our Pride, and we are just getting started.

It has been such an amazing reign to be Miss Ohio Gay Pride, and I’m so excited for what is left of my reign. We are starting this Pride month strong with our very first prelim at Toledo.
