COLUMBUS, Ohio — Shortly after 11:30 a.m., the Columbus Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 1000 block of East Fulton Street involving a two-story building. Upon arrival, crews were met with a significant fire and initial reports of trapped victims.
Firefighters aggressively attacked the blaze using hose lines while two victims on the back side of the structure were forced to jump from the building to escape the rapidly escalating flames. Crews encountered severe access issues on the third floor, where the stairwell had been blocked off, but they successfully navigated the layout and verified that no victims remained trapped upstairs.
The main fire was brought under control within approximately half an hour from the initial call. Both victims who jumped were transported to Ohio State University (OSU) in critical condition.
Roughly an hour after the initial call, the situation was contained with all fire units actively engaged on the scene. Firefighters conducted thorough sweeps of the basement, first, second, and third floors, confirming no additional victims were located. Investigators eventually arrived on the scene to sift through debris—concentrated primarily toward the front of the building where the majority of the fire occurred—to determine the exact origin and cause of the incident.
Independent reporting from the scene by Independent LGBTQIA+ Media Outlet Rainbow Rocks – RainbowRocks.space has drawn sharp focus toward local municipal infrastructure, specifically highlighting critical vulnerabilities regarding water accessibility and the troubling lack of functioning fire hydrants in aging Near East Side blocks. Further updates will be posted when available.
