Tensions flared in the Short North as an unconfirmed incident unfolded at East 4th Avenue and North High Street during the early morning hours at 12:47 a.m. First responder units, including Medic 7, Engine 7, and EMS 10, quickly deployed to the scene to manage the unfolding crisis.
Arriving at the scene, the area was already locked down and heavily taped off by authorities. Standing at the perimeter, the atmosphere crackled with an intense, chaotic energy as onlookers gathered and emergency personnel worked the cordoned-off block.
Not even a few minutes after setting up, starting to take photographs, and conducting an LGBTQIA+ independent news report as an LGBTQIA+ independent investigative reporter for RainbowRocks.space, all hell broke loose. Shots fired were reported toward First Street; officers could be seen running from the stabbing scene down south on High Street toward Domo alongside responding police cruisers. It was an unprecedented scene—watching multiple incidents break off separately in real time. While these events could potentially be related, that connection remains unconfirmed.
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Emergency services responded to a violent sequence of events overnight near the intersection of East 4th Avenue and North High Street following reports of a stabbing, prompting the immediate deployment of emergency units.
The victim was transported to a local area hospital, though their current medical status remains unknown. In response to the emergency, law enforcement temporarily shut down North High Street in both directions between East 4th Avenue and East 5th Avenue to secure the scene and conduct an active investigation. Short North Alliance security team personnel were also on-site within the perimeter, working alongside Columbus police officers to restrict access and manage the area.
Shortly after the initial call, a secondary violent incident was reported further north near 978 N. High Street (by 2nd Avenue and Dublin Cleaners), and down the street near Domo Sushi Kitchen Bar at First and High Street, where multiple eyewitnesses and sources confirmed that suspects fired weapons and a white SUV was struck, leaving visible smoke and debris at the scene. This marked a major violent event unfolding along the corridor between 1st and 5th Avenues after 1:00 AM, where responding personnel located confirmed ballistic evidence on the ground marked by glow sticks. Additionally, a subsequent report noted that a live round was found nearby in the vicinity of 923 Dennison Avenue.
In response to the unfolding danger, popular neighborhood venues including Skully’s Music Diner, Santos, Standard Hall, and Bodega went into immediate lockdown, shutting their doors almost instantly.
Once Columbus police determined the scene was secure, the venues slowly began clearing out the clubs, letting patrons exit as crowds steadily filtered out into the street. However, as the crowds dispersed, subsequent street fights erupted across the area, prompting active police monitoring with a lieutenant overseeing the scene as tensions remained high.
Later still, after 2:15 a.m., as the general crowds cleared out, groups repeatedly attempted street takeovers and further fights trying to cause problems. The Columbus Police Department stepped in firmly to shut down the disruption, while Short North Alliance security personnel were left dealing with mayhem they should never have had to face.
This chaotic chain of events has dealt a heavy blow to the Short North community—a vibrant LGBTQIA+ neighborhood deeply cherished by college students, local residents, visitors, and allies who frequent the district. The violence comes at an especially painful time, unfolding on the eve of the Ohio State University Buckeyes’ first home college football game scheduled for noon against Ball State, casting a heavy shadow over what should be an exciting weekend. It paints a deeply concerning picture of a neighborhood heading downhill while leadership fails to take decisive action against major crime.
