Transgender and non-binary residents in Ohio seeking to update the gender markers on their state-issued driver’s licenses or identification cards can no longer utilize the administrative form previously accepted by the state for nearly two decades.
The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles has immediately discontinued the form previously signed by a licensed medical or mental health provider that allowed individuals to align their state identification with their gender identity. Under the updated implementation, the agency requires individuals to first update the gender or sex marker on their birth certificate before a corresponding change can be reflected on a state-issued driver’s license or ID card.
Administrative Shift and Community Response
According to state officials, the administrative adjustment stems from statutory language enacted in the state budget. The updated policy specifies that state-issued identification cards will record the sex listed on an individual’s birth certificate or passport.
LGBTQ+ legal and advocacy organizations have raised concerns regarding the sudden nature of the transition and the logistical hurdles it introduces for residents.
