Washington, D.C.’s premier LGBTQ+-supportive healthcare and medical provider, Whitman-Walker Health, is preparing to mobilize thousands of participants for its milestone 40th Annual Walk & 5K Run to End HIV, scheduled for Saturday, September 19, 2026.
Marking four decades of community mobilization, frontline research, and comprehensive care, this year’s signature fundraiser will take place at the Anacostia Park Roller Skating Pavilion in Southeast D.C. The event kicks off with the 5K run at 8:45 a.m., immediately followed by the walk at 8:50 a.m.
Reimagining a D.C. Institution for a New Era
Established during the height of the early AIDS crisis as a grassroots community response, the annual event has evolved alongside the epidemic. Originally launched as the local AIDS walk, the rebranded Walk to End HIV reflects modern medical advancements—including life-saving antiretroviral treatments and preventative tools like PrEP—while directly addressing ongoing disparities in healthcare access and shifting geographical needs within the District.
Organizers have strategically relocated the event to Anacostia Park to engage communities in Wards that experience disproportionate health impacts, honoring the legacy of the Max Robinson Center and Whitman-Walker’s broader patient base of over 20,000 individuals across D.C.
Navigating Federal Funding Cuts and Community Resilience
This year’s 40th-anniversary milestone carries a heightened sense of urgency. Organizers have noted that the organization faces acute financial challenges, including the loss of roughly 40 percent of federal research funding—impacting critical HIV-related projects and slashing $400,000 from prevention programs that enabled the administration of 15,000 HIV and STI tests over the past year.
Despite these severe institutional hurdles, Whitman-Walker continues to lean into community-driven support systems. Participants and supporters arriving for the milestone anniversary can expect a robust morning program:
- Schedule: Registration and packet pickup open at 7:30 a.m., followed by a pre-walk warm-up at 8:30 a.m.
- Accessibility: A complimentary shuttle service will run from the Anacostia Metro station (Green Line) to Anacostia Park to assist attendees before and after road closures.
- Post-Walk Program: From 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., a stage program featuring live entertainment, community speakers, and family-friendly activities will take place at the pavilion.
